It is the job of the people in the armed forces to ensure that the citizens of the country are properly defended and protected at all times. This includes ensuring that they are protected against any threat- domestic and foreign. As such, an immense responsibility like this can only be carried out when the right resources, the right tools, and the right technology are present.
In the past, operations are conducted purely on the ground. Over the years though, the development of airborne vehicles have made it possible for troops to conduct their operations with the vantage point of being up in the air. Then, came the 229th assault helicopter battalion- which allowed troops to get hat advantage of being able to attack while n the air.
Back then, helicopters were mostly used by troops for transportation. This would either be to transport troops to different locations, to carry cargo and other items to and from the battlefield, or to provide medical evacuation. In the recent days though, these units can be equipped with certain features and arms to make it possible for it to be used for assaults done above the ground.
For units that are used for assault purposes, being equipped with the necessary weaponry is very important. For instance, they will need to be armed with rockets, autocannons, and in some cases, even guided missiles. It has to be equipped with sophisticated aerobatics and avionics devices too. In addition, it has to provide appropriate anti-tank abilities and sufficient support to the ground troops.
There are different types of modes and roles that these equipment play when it comes to attacks. The first one is where it is used for a standoff approach. They will be used to hover close to the friendlies. Hence, they are then used as a mobile anti-tank missile launcher. For this to succeed, the unit needs to expose itself only when necessary or the low level flight of the unit might cause it to get into trouble.
Another mode is where it is used to climb, approach a target, hit, and then run. In this type, the unit wil be used to climb an altitude to determine the target location, it is then used to get closer to the target. Then, rockets will be fired towards the target. Autocannons may also be used for such purpose. For this approach to work, the vital component of the unit has to be hardened, as well as the gear of the crew too.
Some helicopters are utilized for the hover approach, here, they are used to circle the target, they can then be used to shoot the opposition troops on the ground. Autocannons will often beused to muster this approach. This reproach, however, is not likely to work when the opposition happens to have a really effective air defense.
There are those units that are used to infiltrate. Using the unit's high mobility over really high terrains, it can be used to attack the rear area of the enemy. It will require a more sophisticated troop in order for the tactic to be pulled off though. It needs versatile fire control, appropriate armor, long endurance and versatile armaments.
