Three major levels are exhibited when it comes to the education system in Nigeria. These are the main ones although other minor exists but are not recognized by the government. The acknowledged ones are primary, secondary and tertiary. At the end of this entire learning process, an individual is suppose to have spent at least sixteen years or more depending on the profession of study.
In real sense, nursery schools form the foremost level but parents find it hard to send their kids to these schools since they cannot afford. This is one of the reasons as to why this government finds it hard to recognize it. Those with financial ability usually take up this chance such that when their kids finally enroll for the primary level, they are better off and well prepared psychologically.
The assumption given by the government is that one begins straight away with primary schooling once he or she has reached the required age of six years. On their twelfth birthdays, they should have concluded this system meaning, they are taught for duration of six years. In the end, certification is done for those who have successfully finished the syllabus and thus; have a go ahead to proceed to secondary schools.
Primary level of learning is compulsory for all children in this nation. That is why the government started the system of free primary education under the project of universal basic studies in the year nineteen ninety nine. Here, school fees are catered for and what the parents incur are the minor levies imposed by the respective institution. Under this stage, wearing of distinguished school uniform for pupils in different institution is a must.
From primary school, the students now head for secondary schooling. This is divided into two separate phases each taking a period of three years. The first phase is the junior secondary school which once completed; a certificate of junior secondary school is issued after a three year period. Successful completion guarantees entry into the next phase.
Senior schooling stage comes in handy after the junior one. It takes three years for it to be completed. This one too has its own certificate being issued upon victorious conclusion of studies. This stage provides a good platform for excellence in academics, subject specialization and technical skills. In both levels, since there is no financial support from the government, fee payments have been a huge challenge for parents who are not well off. Those with sufficient money are assured of continuance.
The final level is the tertiary stage. This one takes a minimum of four years as per the regulations of the concerned ministry. This period differs though depending on courses chosen. Professional ones such as medicine and engineering need at least six years of studying. This level consists of universities, colleges and polytechnics.
The tertiary level under the education system in Nigeria guarantees one a first degree certificate. With availability of funds, Nigerians can decide to go for Masters and even Doctorate degrees with the passage of time. These ones are obtainable from universities. Colleges and polytechnics offer Higher National Diploma certificates.
