Deducing Like Sherlock Holmes

By Darrel Jefferson

Anyone who has read or watched Sherlock Holmes knows that this logical genius has somewhat of a super-natural ability to apply the art of deduction in his vast cases. This art is something that most people never fully tap into during their lifetimes but Sherlock was able to master it!

Without being to verbose, it may be as simple as meditating and taking the time out of your busy schedule to think about what has been going on around you.

Challenge yourself with worthwhile goals that enhance your senses and help you stay in tune with the things around you. An example of this is playing or listening to good music. Musicians are able to observe things that many people cant.

There are hundreds of tacit things that surround us on a daily bases and if we don't open our senses to them then they will remain obscurities.

Fourth-Think before you talk. This is all but impossible for some people but if you learn to do this then you will have much more meaningful conversations. All it takes is a little foresight and understanding of people and words.

Third- Think Simple because its really quiet "elementary my dear Watson". Too many people complicate the world around them when there is an obvious and simple answer to most of the puzzling problems in the world today.

So rather than creating larger-than-life problems it is important to break them down, piece by piece, until we can determine what the problem really is. In calculus we call it factoring and it is a very efficient way of taking things apart to save time and effort. Dr. Watson is consistently surprised at the simplicity of Holmes deductive pathways.

One way to create this life style is to clear your life of distractions. Some of these distractions may be simple like having too many dishes in the dish washer, or they can be more complex like having too many things to do. It is easy to see how organization goes hand in hand with observation. It is hard to observe abnormalities when there is no order to your environment. Organization is key to networking as well which is another area we use our observational skills.

Other distraction may be the noise we allow in our lives. Whether it is load music to "give us a break" or just loud environments we live in, they can really take away from our ability to analyze and think properly.

The last distraction that many of us face is the temptations and habits that surround us. They often call us louder than anything else in our lives. Whether it is smoking, drinking, or just as simple as getting on facebook, we may be tuning out to the world around us by indulging in it.

Tenth- Network and find people that share in your desire to develop their intellectual prowess. Associate with those who can uplift and empower you. Too many people do just the opposite because they like how it feels to be the "smartest" one in the group, but if you want to progress it is better to get smarter people to be your friends.
