How To Improve Education For The 21St Century Learners

Providing all students with a solid foundation and Education for the 21st Century, will give them the best opportunity to flourish in a world that is constantly changing. The children of today have to have a deeper understanding and knowledge about a variety of key learning areas than ever before. Teachers have to teach differently in order to cater for student needs and allow students the opportunity for critical thinking. Knowledge, skills, behaviors and general capabilities is the key and development will ensure that these students can function in a world where knowledge is easily accessible and constantly changing.

Learning that reflects contemporary issues will be valuable for those needing to work and function in the 21st Century. Culture and heritage, sustainability and developing interactions with Asian countries are just some of the contemporary issues that will be faced. Exposing students to issues like these will allow for deeper understanding and critical discussion about concerns.

Continuing to implement current policies, curriculum and systems that do not reflect individual needs will be detrimental to the quality of education delivered. General capabilities will be an important inclusion in order to better meet these needs. Developing personal and social capabilities will help learners to develop relationships, improve work habits, and understand and manage themselves. Knowing how to express an appropriate opinion or belief in a social context is an important part of this.

Processing, receiving and accessing information is an area of constant change. The way that children learn and achieve in regards to Information and Communication Technologies will vary as well. The curriculum needs to encompass individual differences in both learning styles and ability to improve achievement and regular process.

Expressing confidence and self-worth and also being able to develop relationships that are healthy and positive is important. The ability to do so can be achieved when students are exposed to perspectives that differ to their own, a variety of country studies, and how things have changed since the past. A difference and diversity capability will cover areas such as this and will help to increase positivity and aims to inform.

The role of the teacher is changing and with that comes a greater responsibility and higher expectations when it comes to achievement and reporting. Knowing how students learn best, knowing what students are already capable of, and planning learning accordingly will assist with this. It has never been more crucial to understand the needs of the child in order for them to be successful and thrive in the future.

Training and develop to encompass new curriculum initiatives is the only way to enable staff to understand and implement changes. The school as a whole will need to change and this will affect the overall culture in a positive way. Allowing teachers to discuss new aspects of the curriculum with colleagues is essential, as is being able to test best practice.

Education for the 21st Century learner will help to develop well-rounded citizens who are able to cope with the demands that future society will place on them. This will not be limited to simple Literacy and Numeracy skills but will encompass a variety of additional threads. Building knowledge, understanding, capabilities and skills will become extremely important.
