Many people think that selling is for the dogs or that anyone can do it. When you get into it though you find out there is actually a science behind it all.

Sales take more than personality it takes persistence and a very good understanding of people and how they work. We can say that psychology and communication play a key role in getting products off the ground and into the hands of customers.

Second- Know what you are talking about before you go talking with people. You want to sound educated when you talk to people.

Third- Show that you really care by listening to them and asking thoughtful questions. Everyone wants to have someone listen to them and this is especially true in Networking. Communication is two way and if you are ready to listen people will be much more receptive to what you have to say later on. Keep others in mind when you are in a conversation.

Fourth- Be the go-to-guy that people want to know. Don't act needy because that only scares away future networking options. This also requires patience as you learn that not everything happens in one day. Also realizing that developing a relationship of trust takes time is part of this too.

Fifth- Respect your contact by treating them the way you would want to be treated. Just remember if it would be annoying if someone did it to you then it is probably the same for them.

Friendly thank you letters or well thought out product descriptions make customers feel like they are dealing with competent professional. Perception is everything in selling and making your customers feel at ease is important for retaining those sales and referring to them later.

As vital a skill as any is the ability to negotiate and stand your ground. Just as stated above, psychology is at play here and it really requires individuals to understand how people think. An amazing salesperson is able to manage his time as well as any professional. Time is money in the business world of sales and just as in any other it requires sales training education.

Eighth- Don't be a diva or make unnecessary demands. Be realistic and realize that you probably won't get much without building a reputation with the person you are networking with. Definitely do not be one of the entitled individuals that feels like they deserve something. This is hard to swallow, especially for many of the self-made workers you will meet on the way.

Ninth- Remember the old principle "Ill scratch your back if your scratch mine". This applies for networking as well because there will be many opportunities to help out the people who help you.
